The Ground Floor

Let’s take a look at some of our rooms in a little more detail to help give you a real feel for the beauty and grace within 52 Old Elvet.

The Villiers is first up and resides on the ground floor. With a stunning, marble fireplace sitting within an amazing open-plan design, the Villiers lets in huge amounts of natural light and offers 2 bedrooms, a kitchen and living space. The Barrington sits beside The Villiers and is a 1 bedroom offering to the left of the entrance hall. The Barrington also features period and modern styling you’d hope to find within this historic building, with a sizeable kitchen and dining area, like all apartments within 52 Old Elvet. The Egerton and Wolsey are the two remaining two bed luxury apartments on the bottom floor to accompany The Barrington and The Villiers.

The Egerton has a fantastic secret entrance to the side of the building, with the Wolsey connecting to the final, one bed apartment, The Tunstall. All of which feature contemporary, luxury features as standard within a unique, high-ceiling, open-space setting. The Tunstall is notable as it was once a grand billiards room in a previous life. Now converted and fitted with all of the modern touches, it is a charming one bed apartment and has access from the rear of the building. The Tunstall was designed by notable architect Charles Hodgson Fowler and features a little more privacy than the others, with all of the contemporary furnishings and appliances as well as a kitchen and dining room.

The First Floor

Then we move on to first floor and The Montague.

With a similar shape and size to its ground floor counterpart, The Villiers, The Montague also features a link to the Royal Family, with Her Majesty the Queen dining on the first floor back when 52 Old Elvet was the Durham County Club. With two bedrooms and two en-suite bathrooms, The Montague overlooks the cobbled footpaths and streets of Durham and features many of the original property features of 52 Old Elvet, such as complex corners and deep skirting.

All of this is complemented expertly by recently renovated and restored contemporary fittings, much like its neighbour, The Morton. The Morton is a single bed occupancy apartment again built around a large kitchen and dining space, and features a shelf- lined cupboard within the kitchen space that is so important it is actually listed, and is one of the oldest features of the entire building – no mean feat! Next to the Morton we have The Gray, a two-bedroom dwelling built much in the same way as The Egerton, which seats beneath it. The Gray is built in an L-shape design and has front and back access thanks to front and rear stairwells.

The Second Floor

The Langley and The Kirkham are a mirror image of one another.

Both with two bedrooms, a luxury bathroom and breath-taking views of the Durham City skyline from the kitchen/dining area.

Each apartment is home to a large amount of the traditional, original features with contemporary styling applied to both. Finally, on the second floor we have The Fordham, another L-shaped two bed apartment with a spacious and comfortable kitchen/dining area. Sitting above The Gray, The Fordham also features access from two angles thanks to a front and rear staircase, and its two bedrooms are perfect for a pair of couples or friends looking for a short stay in one of the most beautiful buildings in Durham City Centre.

“The 12 one and two-bedders in the former Durham County Club, a Grade II listed Georgian mansion across the bridge from the city centre, combine classical details — ceiling friezes, a grand communal staircase — with 21st-century sheen and views of the cathedral.” -The Sunday Times
